Ithaca, New York - Cornell (1-0) picked up a 4-1 win over Stanford (4-3) in its season-opener Friday at Schoellkopf Field after scoring three second half goals to break a 1-1 halftime time. Amrit Chima continued her hot scoring stretch for the Cardinal with the team's lone goal and now has seven points over the last two contests. Stephanie Maher scored a pair of second half goals for the Big Red, while Sarah Nordstrom had three of the team's seven assists.
Annie O'Rourke gave Cornell a 1-0 lead at 22:44 on an assist by Lindsay Grace before Stanford answered back on Chima's goal just before halftime at 34:06 to tie the contest at the break, 1-1. Christina Williams assisted on Chima's goal and now leads Stanford with three assists this season.
Maher then scored her first goal and picked up the first of three Cornell penalty corner scores at 44:55 to give the Big Red a 2-1 advantage. Maher repeated the trick at 56:05 for a 3-1 Cornell lead. Carissa Mirasol and Nordstrom were credited with assists on both goals. The Big Red finished the scoring on a penalty corner goal by Kimmy Gardner at 60:54 with assists for Nordstrom and Laura Barndt.
Cornell goalkeeper Kaitlin Tierney stopped 11 Stanford shots while allowing only one goal.Stanford goalkeepers Emily Zander and Ana Kralovec split the game in the net once again. Zander had a save in the first half and held Cornell to one goal before Kralovec allowed three goals after the break with a pair of saves.
Stanford outshot Cornell, 12-7, marking the seventh consecutive game this season that the Cardinal has outshot its opponent.
Stanford continues its season-long eight-game road trip versus Lafayette on Saturday (12 pm, ET) and Kent State on Sunday (2 pm, ET). Both games will be played at Cornell. Stanford will then return to Northern California to open its NorPac slate at Pacific on Saturday, September 21 (1 pm, PT) before returning home versus Iowa on Sunday, September 22 (1 pm, PT).
