Stanford, Calif. - Senior outside hitter Logan Tom had a match-high 15 kills to lead the fourth-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep over California this evening at Maples Pavilion in Stanford, Calif. Game scores were 30-28, 30-25, 30-18.
The Cardinal improve to 9-1 on the season, 1-0 in Pac-10 play while the Golden Bears are 9-1 overall, 0-1 in league action.
Game one was a hard fought contest between the two teams. After Stanford posted a 12-8 lead, California took their first time out. The two teams traded points until a three point Cal run closed the gap to two at 24-26. The Golden Bears trimmed the lead to one at 27-28 but a kill by Logan Tom put the Cardinal at game point. A Cal service error gave Stanford the 30-28 win.
Stanford opened game two by jumping out to a 9-4 lead before the Golden Bears closed the gap to 13-15. The Cardinal inched ahead 23-20 on an Ashley Ivy kill, forcing a Cal time out. A Sara McGee kill put Stanford up 27-23 while a solo block by Anna Robinson put the Cardinal at game point. Another McGee kill gave Stanford the 30-25 victory.
Game three remained close early with the Cardinal only up by three at the media timeout (15-12). The Cardinal slowly pulled away taking the 20-15 advantage on a Tom kill. An unforced hitting error by the Golden Bears put Stanford up 25-18. The Cardinal would score the next five points to win game and match (30-18).
Stanford hit .333 for the match while the Golden Bears hit .181. The Cardinal outblocked Cal 11 to four on the night.
Ogonna Nnamani chipped in 10 kills and a match-high five blocks. Tom and Jennifer Hucke led the Cardinal with seven digs each. Senior opposite hitter Ashley Ivy chipped in eight kills and a service ace.
Stanford is back in action tomorrow night taking on No. 14 Pepperdine at Maples Pavilion at 7 p.m.
