Box Score

Santa Clara, Calif. - The second-ranked Stanford women's soccer team overcame a 0-0 halftime score and got goals from Lisa Engel (Ventura, CA) and Natalie Sanderson (Ventura, CA) in the second half en route to a 2-0 win over Tennessee on Friday night in the first game of the Santa Clara adidas Classic. The Cardinal improve to 7-0 on the year, while the Lady Vols fall to 6-2.

Engel broke a scoreless tie at 65:38 when she collected the ball off a failed attempt to clear by a Tennessee defender. She fired the shot from 18 yards out, recording her first goal of the season.

The Lady Vols tried to counter in the 70th minute, but Alisan Pabon (Dallas, TX) made a defensive play that stopped the Tennessee forward from a one-on-one situation. Stanford's offense kept pressuring and added an insurance goal at 80:55. Pabon sent a long ball to Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) who spun around a defender and delivered it to Sanderson. Sanderson, a high school teammate of Engel's, sent it by the Lady Vol keeper for her second goal of the season.

In the first half, Stanford outshot Tennessee 6-2 but could not finish. Becky Myers (St. Charles, IL) threaten early and Wallis nearly had a goal at the 39th minute, but the ball sailed just high. The Cardinal also had two good chances right before the break from Jennifer Farenbaugh (Reseda, CA) and Wallis.

Stanford finished with nine shots in the game to the Lady Vol's three. Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, PA) collected three saves for the Cardinal and registered her sixth shutout of the year. Tennessee goalkeeper Ellen Dean tallied two saves in goal.

The Cardinal will head back to Buck Shaw Stadium on Sunday morning when they battle Montana at 11 a.m. in the third game of the Santa Clara adidas Classic.
