Malibu, Calif. - No. 1 Stanford (7-1, 1-1 MPSF) stumbled against 7th-ranked Pepperdine, earning its first loss of the season in Malibu this afternoon. The Waves jumped to a 4-1 first quarter lead and retained control for the rest of the game. Pepperdine improved to 4-3 overall, 1-0 in the conference.
Mountain Pacific Sports Federation leader sophomore Tony Azevedo notched four goals in the game while senior Jeff Guyman added two and freshman Thomas Hopkins put one in the net. The Cardinal made a strong push in the fourth quarter scoring three goals, but fell short as time ran out.
Pepperdine sophomore Jesse Smith notched five goals for the Waves, including three in the first quarter to lead the scoring for both teams. Goalkeeper Mike Soltis collected nine saves to slow the Stanford offense.
The Cardinal are back in action tomorrow at Loyola Marymount for a noon game and will travel to Stockton on Wed., Oct. 2 for a 4 p.m. match against Pacific.
