Stanford, Calif. - The third-ranked Stanford women's soccer team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 1-0 win over No. 10 Texas on Sunday afternoon at Maloney Field. Junior Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) headed in the game-winner off an Alisan Pabon (Dallas, TX) cross at 59:39.
Goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, PA) has yet to allow a goal, picking up her third shut-out of the year.
Stanford put pressure on the Longhorns early, with Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA), Callie Withers (Los Altos Hills, CA), Brittany Oliveira (Los Angeles, CA) and Ward each tallying shots in the first 20 minutes. The Cardinal defense put the stop on Texas in the first half, allowing no Longhorn shots.
After a near goal by Allyson Marquand (Irvine, CA) that was blocked by a Texas defender, Stanford finally found the back of the net 30 seconds later. Pabon played the Cardinal throw-in and was able to recover the ball, sending a cross that was headed in by Ward at 59:39.
That was all Stanford would need, as they out-shot the Longhorns 13-3 for the game. Withers, Wallis and Ward all recorded three shots, while freshman Leah Tapscott (Madison, WI) came off the bench to collect two shots.
Stanford improves to 3-0-0 on the season, while Texas falls to 3-1-0. The Cardinal will be in action next Friday, September 13, when they take on Saint Mary's College. First kick is set for 7 p.m. on Maloney Field.
