Los Angeles, Calif. - Callie Withers (Los Altos Hills, CA) scored on a free kick just 4:43 into the game and Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, PA) played outstanding in goal as the second-ranked Stanford women's soccer team beat No. 12 UCLA 1-0 at Drake Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Despite being outshot 12-5, the Cardinal improve to 11-1-0 on the year.
For the second consecutive game, Stanford has found the back of the net in the first five minutes. A UCLA yellow card just outside the Bruin box, set up Withers' third goal of the season. The Cardinal managed just one more shot before the break at 35:20 when Marcia Wallis' (Los Gatos, CA) attempt sailed wide.
UCLA dominated most of the second half, and outshot Stanford 10-3. The Cardinal did manage their best scoring opportunity in the 53rd minute off a corner kick, when Wallis, Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) and Kelsey Carlson (Citrus Heights, CA) all recorded shots.
The Bruins had a scoring opportunity in the 77th minute, but Barnhart was forced to make an incredible diving save following a shot from UCLA freshman Iris Mora. UCLA kept the pressure on and in the 86th minute of play, Whitney Jones took the free kick following a Stanford foul. Jones bent the ball over the Cardinal wall, hitting the crossbar. Barnhart picked up her final save at 87:50 when she jumped up and saved Jones' free kick.
For the first time this season, Stanford was outshot 12-5 but held the corner kick advantage 7-2. Barnhart recorded six saves en route to her eighth shutout of the season. UCLA falls to 9-3-0 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
Stanford will continue Pac-10 play at home when they host Oregon State on Friday, Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m. and Oregon on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m.
