Stanford Coed Sailors Earn Third At Intersectional

Oct. 12-13, 2002

Treasure Island, Calif. - The Stanford Coed sailors earned 3rd out of 18 teams in the varsity fleet of the annual Stoney Burke Intersectional hosted by Cal at Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay. Twelve races were held in both A and B divisions. Sailing in A division for the Cardinal, Ted Conrads '03 and Lucy Horton '05 finished a solid second place to Hawaii's Brian Lake/Elena Millard, with a comfortable cushion between the Cardinal and third place USC's David Levy /Jenny Hochschild. "Our A team showed great consistency through both days of the regatta," explained Coach Brent Harrill, "Ted and Lucy were always on." In B division, Dave Phillips '04 and Sonja Bebber '04 sailed Saturday's six races, and remained tied with USC's Mikee Mitterling/Kyrstin Munson, until taking a turn in one of the older boats in the rotation, which added an 11 and 12 to the B division score. On Sunday Dave Kenny '03 sailed with Bebber, earning enough top 10 finishes to keep the Cardinal B in 3rd place in B. "Sonja was the star of B division, performing consistently and making it easier for Kenny to jump into day two of the competition," Coach Harrill commented.

Although scores are not yet available for JV, it was clear that the Cardinal dominated the 20 boats of the JV Fleets. Many new crews made their college sailing debut this weekend with the Cardinal. Sailing in the JV Fleets, impressive performances were made by Freshman skipper Liz Rountree and crew Megan Heinen, as well as Freshman skipper Chris Ralli and crew Allen Anderson '05. Sophomores Jeff Allen sailed Saturday and Andy Mesher sailed Sunday with crew Alli Salatti '05. Matt Hooks '03 sailed with Diana Ly '04 and Nate Tulloch '03 sailed with Anna Vu '06.

Next weekend, the Cardinal Coed Sailors fly back east to compete in the Navy Fall Intersectional. Considered the most competitive regatta of the Fall, the event requires each team compete in four divisions; two doublehanded and two singlehanded. Competing of the Cardinal will be seniors Ted Conrads, Dave Kenny, and Matt Hooks; Juniors Sonja Bebber and Dave Phillips; Sophomores Jeff Allen and Lucy Horton; Freshmen Brian Haines and Chris Ralli.
