Stanford, Calif. - Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) and Callie Withers (Los Altos Hills, CA) scored for the No. 1 ranked Stanford women's soccer team as the Cardinal improved to 12-1-0 with a 2-0 defeat of Oregon State on Friday night at Maloney Field. The Cardinal outshot the Beavers 26-3 and stand in first place with a perfect 3-0 mark in the Pac-10.
Stanford needed only 1:46 to get on the board. Wallis took a pass from Katherine Harrington (Fort Worth, TX) and Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) and fired a shot by Oregon State keeper Jo Fletcher for a 1-0 lead.
Following two near goals in the 7th and 13th minute by Withers, the Beavers recorded consecutive shots of their own. Lindsey Beem hit the post and Katie Henderson fired a shot that was saved by Stanford keeper Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, PA).
Wallis had another scoring opportunity just before the break, but her attempt sailed wide. Stanford outshot Oregon State 10-2 in the first half.
The Cardinal started the second half firing, with Lisa Engel (Ventura, CA), Ward and Leah Tapscott (Madison, WI) all recording shots. In the 55th minute, Natalie Sanderson's (Ventura, CA) attempt hit the post. Stanford made it 2-0 at 71:12 when Megan Alderete (Riverside, CA) played a ball to Withers, who netted her fourth goal of the season from 15 yards out.
Stanford had opportunities with 15 minutes remaining, but Withers' shot hit the post and Kelsey Carlson's (Citrus Heights, CA) attempt landed just wide.
Barnhart picked up her ninth shutout of the year for the Cardinal and Fletcher tallied six saves in goal for Oregon State. Stanford outshot the Beavers 26-3 as Oregon State falls to 7-5-2 overall and 0-3 in league play.
Stanford will continue Pac-10 action on Sunday when they host the Oregon Ducks. First kick is set for 1 p.m. on Maloney Field.
