Stanford, Calif. - Yale goalkeeper Krissy Nesburg recorded 15 saves and held Stanford without a goal until Amanda Billmyer finally tallied with 4:01 remaining (65:59) to lead the Bulldogs (5-8) to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Stanford (8-9) in a non-conference game at the Varsity Field Hockey Turf on Sunday. Stanford amassed 25 shots to Yale's 17, outshooting its opponent for the 15th time in 17 games this season and the seventh time in nine Cardinal defeats.
"We played well, but we're still looking to capitalize on our opportunities," said Stanford head coach Sheryl Johnson after coaching her 300th career collegiate game.
Yale actually took the first 10 shots of Sunday's contest, including the only goal of the first half by Elizabeth Topp on an assist from Sarah Driscoll at 13:19. Stanford finished with 17 first half shots but did not score before the break.
Despite a combined 42 shots by both teams, neither squad would score again until Yale's Jana Halfon registered an unassisted insurance goal at 63:23 that the Bulldogs would need when Billmyer picked up her eighth goal of the campaign only 1:36 later to cut the Bulldog lead in half.
Billmyer's goal gave her 17 points on the season, tying her for the team lead.
Stanford goalkeeper Ana Kralovec registered seven saves in her first start of the season.
The game also featured five defensive saves, three by Stanford (Lauren Steward 2, Amrit Chima 1) and two by Yale (Brigid Boland, Chrissy Hall).
Stanford will host a pair of exhibition games next weekend versus its Alumnae (Saturday, October 26) and UC Santa Barbara (Sunday, October 27). The Cardinal closes its regular season by hosting first-place California on Saturday, November 2. All games begin at 1:00 pm. California (3-0 NorPac) is currently percentage ahead of Stanford (4-1 NorPac) in the race for the NorPac West Division title after defeating the Cardinal, 2-1, in their first meeting of the season October 12 in Berkeley.
