Top-Ranked Stanford Slips Past Cougars

Pullman, Wash. - Marcie Ward's (Alamo, CA) goal in the 29th minute provided the game's only scoring and lifted No. 1 Stanford to a 1-0 win over host Washington State in Pac-10 women's soccer action on Friday afternoon in Pullman. With the win the Cardinal improve to 14-1-0 and 5-0 in the conference, while the Cougars fall to 7-5-2 and 1-1-2 in the league.

Lindsey Hunt (San Marino, CA) played the ball into the midfield to Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) and with a touch pass, Ward scooted past the Washington State defense and beat Cougar goalie Sara Leibowitz. Ward's goal at 28:28 marks her eighth score of the season.

The Cardinal defense allowed seven shots on the afternoon, while Stanford outshot Washington State 20-7. Ward led the charge with four shots, while Allyson Marquand (Irvine, CA) tallied three, all on goal.

Stanford keeper Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, PA) had a relatively easy day and did not record a save in the match, but recorded her sixth straight shutout and 11th of the season.

The Cardinal will continue on the road on Sunday as they travel to Seattle to face Washington. Kick off is set for noon at the Husky Soccer Field.
