Seattle, Wash. - The top-ranked Stanford women's soccer team needed only one goal for the second consecutive game en route to a 1-0 shutout win over No. 25 Washington on Sunday afternoon in front of 2542 fans at Husky Soccer Field. Freshman Jennifer Farenbaugh (Reseda, CA) scored the game-winner at 37:59 as the Cardinal improve to 15-1-0 overall.
Stanford remains in first place in the Pacific-10 Conference, standing at 6-0 in league action. Washington (8-5-3) sustained its first conference defeat, dropping to 3-1-1.
Washington controlled the run of play for the opening 20 minutes, but could only manage two shots during that span against the Cardinal defense. The Huskies best scoring opportunity came in the 10th minute when Tina Frimpong collected the ball in front of the Stanford net and fired a shot that was saved by Cardinal keeper Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, PA) at the left side of the goal.
The Cardinal offense stepped up the offensive pressure in the latter portion of the first half, attempting all nine of their first half shots during the final 25 minutes. Stanford registered three shots on goal, but were denied by Washington goalie Hope Solo.
Stanford finally broke through at 37:59 when Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) fed a pass from the left wing to Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) whose shot was blocked by Solo. Farenbaugh collected the rebound and poked a 10-yard shot in the Husky goal.
The teams each had five shots in the second half with Stanford presenting the most dangerous opportunity. Allyson Marquand (Irvine, CA) veered toward the goal from the left side in the 52nd minute, drawing Solo off her line. Marquand's low, 20-yard shot slipped past the out-stretched arms of the diving Solo, but deflected off the right post.
For the match, the Cardinal outshot the Huskies 14-8. Barnhart finished with four saves for Stanford, who recorded her 12th shutout of the year and eighth consecutive.
The Cardinal will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 2 when they travel across the bay to face rival California in Berkeley. Match time is set for 1 p.m. on Goldman Field.
