Stanford, Calif. - The top-ranked Stanford women's soccer team used five goals in the first half and cruised to a 6-0 victory over visiting Arizona on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Maloney Field. The victory gives the Cardinal the 2002 Pac-10 Championship, concluding the regular season with a 18-1-0 overall mark and a perfect 9-0 record in the conference. Stanford got on the board quickly, with its first two shots of the game resulting in goals. Following an Arizona foul at 1:45, Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) took the free kick and volleyed it to Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA). Wallis then fired it by Wildcat keeper Natalie Juarez for her ninth goal of the season. Ward's assist on the goal ties former Cardinal Sarah Rafanelli (1990-93) for the all-time career assist record with 34 in 60 matches.

Ward then added Stanford's second goal at 8:25 when Becky Myers (St. Charles, IL) pulled the Arizona keeper out of the box, setting up Ward's header for the 2-0 lead. The Wildcats recorded their first shot in the 20th minute when Lindsey Greenwood's header was saved by Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, PA).

Stanford then rattled off three more scores to close out the half. Jennifer Farenbaugh (Reseda, CA) beat the Arizona defenders and fired past the keeper at 31:39 for her first of two goals in the game. Eight minutes later, Kelsey Carlson (Citrus Heights, CA) had a shot blocked and 30 seconds later found the back of the net off the right post. Wallis added her second goal of the afternoon at 42:25 from a Katherine Harrington (Fort Worth, TX) cross, giving Stanford a 5-0 advantage at halftime.

Arizona nearly scored a goal in the 60th minute when Tymarie Novak took the free kick and Barnhart made an amazing save, jumping up to tip the ball away. Farenbaugh added Stanford's final goal at 61:47, collecting the rebound from Natalie Sanderson's (Ventura, CA) shot that deflected off the Wildcat keeper.

The Cardinal outshot Arizona 27-2 for the game and recorded their 15th team shutout. Barnhart upped her shutout total to 14 on the season and finished with two saves, while Juarez recored seven saves in goal for the Wildcats.
