STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore T'Nae Thiel (Weatherford, TX) recorded a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead sixth-ranked Stanford University to an easy 89-73 exhibition victory over Love & Basketball on Sunday afternoon at Maples Pavilion. The Cardinal cruised to a 20-point halftime lead, and led by as many as 30 (75-45) to start the season on a positive note.
Stanford concludes its exhibition schedule on Thursday (November 14) as it hosts Team Concept at 7:00 p.m. at Maples Pavilion, and opens the 2002-03 regular season when it hosts Rutgers on Friday, November 22 at 7:00 p.m.
Love & Basketball, which defeated UCLA on Saturday, used an early 9-2 run to take a 15-8 advantage 7 minutes, 11 seconds into the contest.
But the Cardinal answered right back with a 14-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer from sophomore Sebnem Kimyacioglu (Mountain View, CA), to take a 22-17 advantage. Stanford then used 9-0 and 7-0 runs late in the first half to take a 46-26 halftime lead. Stanford was 8-of-16 from 3-point range in the first half, compared to 0-of-3 for Love & Basketball.
The Cardinal put the game away midway through the second half with a 14-4 run that gave it a 75-45 lead with 7:58 to play. Thiel had the final six points in the run, and had nine points in just nine minutes of action in the second half.
In addition to the double-double from Thiel, Stanford had three other players score in double figures. Kimyacioglu had 13 points, including three 3-pointers, and six assists, sophomore Azella Perryman (Anchorage, AK) added 13 points and six rebounds and sophomores Chelsea Trotter (San Dimas, CA) and Kelley Suminski (Chester, NJ) chipped in 10 points apiece. All nine Stanford players in uniform made it into the scoring column, and each player saw at least 13 minutes of action.
The three leading scorers for Love & Basketball were all former Stanford players. Cori Enghusen led the way with a game-high 17 points, while Melody Peterson had 13 points and Charmin Smith added 10 points and eight rebounds.
