Stanford, Calif. - Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) scored two goals and Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) added three assists as the No. 1 Stanford women's soccer team defeated Cal Poly 4-0 in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday night at Maloney Field in front of 1,817 fans. The Cardinal advances to play Cal on Sunday in the Second Round, while the Mustangs end their season at 14-6-0 overall.

Stanford (19-1-0) needed only five minutes to get in the scoring column. Ward took the Cardinal corner kick and was headed by Callie Withers (Los Altos Hills, CA). Withers' header came up short and was kicked in by Wallis at 5:07 for the 1-0 lead. Ward's assist on the goal broke the school record for career assists, previously set by Sarah Rafanelli (1990-93).

Eleven minutes later the Cardinal connected on another corner kick at 16:19, again taken by Ward. Ward's cross was controlled by Withers, who fired her fifth goal of the season past Cal Poly keeper Greta Shirdon.

The Mustangs threatened in the 33rd minute when Heather Bryan fired a shot that was saved by Stanford's Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, PA). The Cardinal took the 2-0 advantage into halftime and outshot the Mustangs 15-4, lead by Wallis' five shots.

Ward and Wallis connected again at 55:56 off a free kick. Ward picked up her third assist of the match when she played the ball to Wallis who beat the defender and put the ball into the right corner for her second score and 12th of the season. Stanford added its final goal at 71:21 when Jennifer Farenbaugh (Reseda, CA) found the back of the net from 30 yards out, increasing the Cardinal lead to four.

"It was an excellent team performance tonight," said co-coach Paul Sapsford. "I would like to congratulate Cal Poly, they fought to the very every end. It was a great win for us and we are looking forward to our game with Cal."

Stanford outshot Cal Poly 27-4 for the game, led by Wallis and Farenbaugh's seven attempts each. Barnhart picked up three saves in her 15th shutout of the year, while Shirdon had 13 saves in goal for Cal Poly. The Cardinal also earned 17 corner kicks to the Mustang's one.

The Cardinal will play Cal, 2-0 winners over Denver, in the Second Round of the tournament on Sunday at 1 p.m. on Maloney Field. Stanford and Cal played on Nov. 2 in Berkeley, with the Cardinal taking the 2-1 victory.
