Stanford, Calif. - Allyson Marquand (Irvine, CA) netted the game-winning goal at 94:01 to give the top-ranked Stanford Cardinal the 1-0 overtime victory over Cal on Sunday afternoon in front of 1769 fans at Maloney Field in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. Stanford moves on to play Notre Dame on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. at The Farm, while the Golden Bears end their season at 12-8-1.
Following two hard-fought 45-minute periods ending in a 0-0 tie, Stanford needed only four minutes to find the back of the net. Alisan Pabon (Dallas, TX) won the ball from a Cal defender and played it up to Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA). Wallis then collected the ball and sent a cross that was flicked headed by Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) and landed at Marquand's feet. Marquand finished it off and netted her second goal of the season into the right corner.
"The ball landed at my feet and I just put in it," said Marquand. "I was hoping it would go in and it did. We knew it was only a matter of time. We were patient and we got it done today."
The Cardinal had a chance at the end in the 82 minute when Wallis' shot hit the post and nearly bounced in. Withers managed two more shots, but both attempts came up wide sending the game into overtime.
Stanford controlled the first half, outshooting the Bears 10-2. Cal's Carly Fuller recorded the first shot of the game in the 11th minute, then the Cardinal rattled of four consecutive. Stanford has its best chance in the 42nd minute when Withers' header was saved by keeper Sani Post off a free kick from Hayley Hunt (San Marino, CA).
Cal came out of the break firing shots by Fuller that was saved by Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, PA). One minute later, Tracy Hamm's shot sailed high. Withers, Jennifer Farenbaugh (Reseda, CA) and Marquand all got off shot in the second half, only to come up short.
For the game, Stanford outshot Cal 20-6 with 10 shots being on target. Barnhart finished with four saves en route to her 16th shutout, fourth consecutive. Post had a game-high nine saves for the Bears in goal.
"Congratulations to Cal. They battled for 94 minutes," said co-coach Stephanie Erickson. "We defended very well and Barnhart dominated the goal area. We created lots of chances and we knew our time would come. It was a tough second round game."
Stanford advances to the Third Round for the second straight season and will play Notre Dame on Saturday, Nov. 23. Kick off is set for 7 p.m. at Maloney Field.
