Stanford Sailors End Fall Season Third

Nov. 16-17, 2002

Santa Barabara, Calif. - The Stanford Coed Sailing Team finished 3rd at this weekend's annual North/South Regatta. The North/South is the culmination of the two month fall season, and determines the rankings for picking the spring season regattas. The four-division event was plagued with light air, only getting two races off on Saturday and the remaining six on Sunday. Consistency paid off for North/South champion University Southern California and second place U Hawaii. Both schools were able to win two divisions with very low point scores, leaving the Cardinal to third overall because of their inconsistent scores.

USC freshman Mikee Mitterling dominated the doublehanded A-Division by 19 points over the Cardinal's Ted Conrads '03 and Lucy Horton '05. "Ted and Lucy got the job done by finishing second," said coach Kehoe, "Mitterling was on his game and tough to catch in the light and shifty breeze."

Dominating in the doublehanded B-Division was UC Irvine's top skipper, Jordan Korss. Like their teammates in Conrads/Horton in A, Stanford's Dave Phillips '04 and Sonja Bebber '04 also battled with the Trojans for second in B-Division. by the conclusion of the 8th and final race, Phillips/Bebber were tied for 2nd, and lost the tiebreaker to USC's David Levy and Kyrstin Munson.

C- and D-Divisions were sailed in singlehanded Lasers. Stanford Freshman Brian Haines competed in C-division, finishing 4th in the fleet. "Haines had a tough time in the light air at Lake Cachuma," explained Coach Kehoe "two races out of the top 5 are the difference between 2nd and 4th." Taking 1st in C was Hawaii's Matt Stine, who dominated in the the light air earning 6 first place finishes in 8 races.

Senior Dave Kenny competed in D-Division for Stanford. Again, the light air was a factor, with Kenny losing 2nd in D to USC's Katie Clausen by one point. D was dominated by Hawaii's Willy Edwards, who earned 6 top-2 finishes in 8 races, finishing an insurmountable 10 points ahead of Kenny.

With the exception of a few winter events, the Stanford Sailors put their boats away until late February. Their Spring season will begin in March, and at that time the Cardinal will set their sights on the top-2 at Women's, Coed and Team Race Pacific Coast Championships in April to qualify for the Pacific Coast berths to the National Championship to be held in Detroit in June.
