Stanford, CA - Nora Feddersen scored a pair of goals to lead California (12-6) to a 6-0 victory over Appalachian State (5-14) in a first round game of the 2002 NorPac Championships on Thursday at the Varsity Field Hockey Turf. Feddersen, who was named the NorPac's West Division Player of the Year late Wednesday at the league's award banquet, now has 30 points and 12 goals on the season. The Golden Bears also received goals from Lisa D'Anjou, Stephanie Lyons, Alexandra Harkins and Danya Sawyer.
California, seeded No. 1 in the West Division after winning the regular season West title with a perfect 6-0 record, moves on to a NorPac semifinal game versus Pacific on Friday at 11 am. Appalachian State will play Southwest Missouri State in a consolation bracket game at 9 am. Pacific (No. 3 West) defeated Southwest Missouri State (No. 2 East) by a score of 3-0 in the first of four opening round games on Friday.
California goalkeeper Kelly Knapp recorded her fifth shutout of the season for the Golden Bears and picked up a pair of saves.
D'Anjou scored the first and only goal the Golden Bears would need on an assist from Jessica Bird at 9:10 before an unassisted goal by Feddersen at 16:15 gave California a 2-0 lead. The Golden Bears would score two more times in the first half on goals by Lyons (23:01) and Harkins (33:11) to take a 4-0 lead at the break. Sawyer and Pooja Mehta were credited with assists on Lyons' goal, while Harkins tallied unassisted.
Feddersen scored on a penalty stroke at 42:56 to extend the California lead to 5-0 and Sawyer closed out the scoring with a goal at 58:56 with an assist by Maggie Grimes.
Appalachian State goalkeepers Kate Ryno (first half) and Amy Sarno (second half) split the contest, with Ryno recording three saves. Emma Schaufele also picked up the only defensive save of the contest for the Mountaineers.
California outshot Appalachian State, 14-9, while the Mountaineers held a slim 7-6 advantage in penalty corners.
