Santa Barbara, Calif. - The top-ranked Stanford women's water polo team used four goals in the first quarter to start a 9-0 run en route to defeating UC Santa Barbara 9-2 on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinal picked up its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation win to stand at 1-0 in conference play and 9-0 overall.
Stanford, coming off a great performance last weekend to win the Gaucho Invitational, put up four goals in the first quarter to begin the game. Margie Dingeldein (Merced, CA) put the Cardinal on the board first that went on to start a 9-0 Stanford run.
The Cardinal defense kept Santa Barbara scoreless after three quarters, but the Gauchos managed to score two goals in the fourth quarter making the final score 9-2.
MPSF Player of the Week Brenda Villa (Commerce, CA) led the Stanford attack, scoring three goals. Ellen Estes (Novato, CA) and Dingeldein each netted two scores, while Wendy Watkins (Modesto, CA) and Julie Gardner (Atherton, CA) completed the Cardinal scoring.
Stanford will face second-ranked UCLA tomorrow afternoon in Los Angeles. The Cardinal have won the previous two meeting between the Bruins earlier this year.
