No. 3 USC Upsets Top-Ranked Women's Water Polo 7-6

Los Angeles, Calif. - USC scored with 1:03 remaining in regulation to upset top-ranked Stanford 7-6 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action at McDonald's Swim Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinal suffered its first loss of the season and is now 13-1 overall and 5-1 in the MPSF. The Women of Troy improved to 17-2 on the season and remain in first place with an 8-0 conference record.

USC took a 3-1 lead after the first period, but Stanford rallied with three goals in the second for a 4-4 tie at halftime. Brenda Villa (Commerce, CA) netted two scores and Margie Dingeldein (Merced, CA) added one to tie the game.

The Women of Troy jumped out to a 6-4 lead in the third quarter, but a score by Julie Gardner (Atherton, CA) put Stanford within one heading into the final period. Villa then tied the game at 6-6 with 1:51 left in the game, but USC's Sandra Milicev netted her first goal of the game with 1:03 remaining to give the Women of Troy the 7-6 victory.

Villa led Stanford with two goals, while USC's Nina Wengst led all scorers with three goals in the game.

Stanford will return home next weekend to host San Diego State on Friday (April 5) at 7 p.m. The Cardinal will then face Long Beach State at 10 a.m. and UC Irvine at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 7th. All matches will take place at Avery Aquatic Center.
