Stanford, Calif. - Cal scored in the first 30 seconds in the game but the second-ranked Stanford women's water polo team netted six unanswered goals en route to a 7-4 Cardinal win over the No. 4 Golden Bears at the Avery Aquatic Center on Friday night. Senior Margie Dingeldein (Merced, CA) highlighted the evening by scoring four goals in her final home game as a Cardinal.
Stanford improves to 17-1 overall and 9-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Cal drops to 14-7 on the year and 7-3 in conference play.
Julia Cesnik got the Bears on the scoreboard first with 6:31 remaining in the first quarter following a Stanford ejection. The Cardinal then answered with three straight goals from Dingeldein and one from Brenda Villa (Commerce, CA) to lead 4-1 at the half.
Dingeldein and Villa added scores to put Stanford up 6-1. Ericka Lorenz and Brenna Fleener netted goals for Cal in the fourth quarter, but a Kate Pettit (Bainbridge Island, CA) score stopped the Bear rally with 2:31 left in the game. Cal's Chris Lane recorded the final goal of the game as Stanford held on 7-4.
Dingeldein led all players with four goals and Villa added two more for Stanford. Jackie Frank (Long Beach, CA) was outstanding in goal for the Cardinal, finishing with 10 saves. Lauren Dennis recorded seven save in goal for the Bears.
The Cardinal will take a break from MPSF play to travel to UC Davis on Sunday to face the Aggies at 1 p.m.
