Season Gets Underway With A Successful Start For Men's Crew

April 2, 2002

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - On March 30th, the Cardinal raced the Santa Clara Broncos and Sacramento State Hornets. The sunny and slightly breezy conditions were perfect for racing. Universally recognized as the finest and fairest dual racing course in the country, Redwood Shores helped the Cardinal and their opponents gauge speed.

The races belonged to the Cardinal as they swept all eight oared races. Director of Rowing and Men's Head Coach Craig Amerkhanian noted: "We are fortunate to be on the race course in ideal conditions. Today, the boats showed traces of speed that we hope to build on for the San Diego Crew Classic."

The most recent addition to the expanding Cardinal fleet is the M2 shell, christened the "Dr. Paul Ford". In its inaugural race, the Varsity Eight raced the hull to the fastest time of the day. "We were really excited to race in the new boat. " noted Varsity seven seat Bryant Helvey "We wanted to use this race as an opportunity to get more from our group." The Freshmen Crew also continued their winning streak. The Eight turned in the fastest Stanford frosh time in recent memory.

Stanford Men next race in San Diego on Mission Bay in the Crew Classic on April 6th & 7th. Check out www.crewclassic.org for more information.
