No. 12 Men's Crew Raced No. 8 Oregon State and No. 6 Wisconsin

April 22, 2002

Redwood Shores, CA - On the second day of racing at the Stanford Invitational, the Cardinal Men raced both the University of Wisconsin and Oregon State. The races were part of a collection of some of the fastest collegiate crews from the West and Midwest. The University of Wisconsin and Stanford Men's Varsity 8+ race was the inaugural competition for the Dylan Cappel cup, a perpetual trophy given in honor of the late Wisconsin oarsman and San Mateo native.

The morning schedule was designed to give the University of Wisconsin several racing opportunities. Head Wisconsin Coach Chris Clark noted: "The West Coast trip was everything I imagined it could be. Redwood Shores is a fair and fast course. I have seen racecourses all over the world and as a dual racecourse, it is in a class by itself." The racing schedule was loaded with nationally ranked crews. The first race of the day had California and Wisconsin kick off the racing. The next race featured the Cardinal Varsity 8+ racing Oregon State. The first 1000 meters of the race proved exciting for the Cardinal as both boats battled seat for seat. The second half of the race turned unfortunate as Oregon State pulled away from the Varsity 8.

In other races, the Junior Varsity and Freshmen both fell to OSU. The Frosh race was decided in the last 500 meters, as the Beavers were able to move through the Cardinal at the line, winning by 2.2 seconds.

For the latter half of the morning, the Cardinal Varsity raced the University of Wisconsin. The inaugural race was held in honor of Dylan Cappel, a San Mateo native, Serra High School graduate and Wisconsin oarsman who was lost to cancer. Coach Amerkhanian stated: "It was an honor to race in the inaugural Cappel Cup. In my eyes, the Wisconsin crew is a top 3 crew. Each of the boats raced hard and strong, competing in Dylan's memory will make us better men and people." The racing was spirited and strong. A strong tailwind picked up the crews to some of the fastest times of the day. Coach Clark remarked: "I think that the times both crews turned in were more indicative of their respective speeds. Both performances looked natural and fluid. With the future plans for an even larger regatta at Redwood Shores, we are committed to the opportunity for quality races against high level competitors." Wisconsin won both the Varsity and Junior Varsity races. There was no freshmen race.
