Los Angeles, Calif. - The top-ranked Stanford women's water polo team used four goals from senior Margie Dingeldein (Merced, CA) to defeat Hawai'i 14-4 in the team's opening game of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament at the McDonald's Swim Stadium on Friday afternoon. The Cardinal advance to face the winner of California and Long Beach State tomorrow at 3 p.m.
Stanford jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, scoring five more goals in the second frame. The Cardinal held a 9-1 halftime advantage and added four more scores in the third en route to a 14-4 win.
Dingeldein led all scorers with four goals. Brenda Villa (Commerce, CA) added three scores, while Julie Gardner (Atherton, CA) and Kelty Luber (Beaverton, OR) each contributed two goals. Jackie Frank (Long Beach, CA) had four saves in goal for the Cardinal.
Erin Kocher led Hawai'i with two goals and goalie Christa Tackaberry had a game-high six saves.
No. 1 seed Stanford continues play in the MPSF Tournament tomorrow against the winner of fourth seed Cal and No. 5 Long Beach State at 3 p.m.
