Los Angeles, Calif. - Jessica Lopez scored three goals Sunday to lead the UCLA Bruins to an 11-7 win against the Stanford Cardinal to win the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Women's Water Polo Championship at McDonald's Swim Stadium on the campus of USC. UCLA wins the automatic bid to the NCAA Championship, May 11-12 at USC, while Stanford will most likely earn the at-large bid. The four entrants will be announced on Monday.
The Cardinal jumped ahead 2-0 in the first quarter, but the Bruins came back to score three goals in the second and tie the game 3-3 at halftime. UCLA then added four goals in both the third and fourth quarters, while Stanford could only manage two apiece that ended in a 11-7 Bruin win.
Stanford was led by two goals each from Margie Dingeldein (Merced, CA), Jeanine Jackson (Los Angeles, CA) and Ellen Estes (Novato, CA). Jackie Frank (Long Beach, CA) recorded four saves in goal for the Cardinal.
The Cardinal fall to 21-2 on the season, while UCLA improves to 21-3.
