Stanford, Calif. - The second-ranked Stanford women's water polo team used three goals by senior Ellen Estes (Novato, CA) en route to a 11-5 win over No. 5 Long Beach State on Sunday morning at the Avery Aquatic Center. The Cardinal improve to 15-1 overall and 7-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the 49ers fall to 11-9 and 4-5 in conference play.
Stanford jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter behind two goals from seniors Margie Dingeldein (Merced, CA) and one from Kate Pettit (Bainbridge, WA). Long Beach State came back to score two goals in the second quarter, but the Cardinal took advantage of three 49er ejections. Brenda Villa (Commerce, CA) netted her first goal of the game at 6:25 in the second frame and Estes scored back-to-back goals for Stanford to put them up 7-2 at the half.
Consecutive goals by Long Beach State's Roberta Stewart brought the 49ers within 9-4 at the end of the third quarter. Jeanine Jackson (Los Angeles, CA) and Villa added Stanford's final scores to hold a 11-4 lead. Stewart recorded her third goal of the game with 2:22 remaining, but it was not enough as the Cardinal held on 11-5.
Estes led the Cardinal with three goals, while Dingeldein, Jackson and Villa each added two apiece. Stewart accounted for most of the 49er offense, recording three scores. Goalkeeper Jackie Frank (Long Beach, CA) had seven saves for the Cardinal, while Bri Hawkins registered six saves in goal for Long Beach State.
The Cardinal will continue their doubleheader with a game this afternoon against No. 17 UC Irvine at 2 p.m. in the Avery Aquatic Center.
