Stanford, Calif. - The second-ranked Stanford women's water polo team jumped ahead 5-0 in the first quarter and never looked back, handing No. 17 UC Irvine a 13-3 defeat on Sunday afternoon at the Avery Aquatic Center. The Cardinal, playing in their second game of the day, had eight athletes record goals.
Stanford improved to 16-1 overall and 8-1 in the MPSF. Irvine falls to 8-18 and 1-8 in conference play.
The Cardinal scored five unanswered to start the game on goals from Julie Gardner (Atherton, CA), Margie Dingeldein (Merced, CA), Brenda Villa (Commerce, CA), Ellen Estes (Novato, CA) and Kelty Luber (Beaverton, OR). Lauren Volcan put the Anteaters on the scoreboard with 40 seconds remain in the first quarter to hold the score at 5-1. Stanford then added three more scores, two from Villa, before halftime to hold the 8-1 lead at intermission.
Jeanine Jackson (Los Angeles, CA) recorded two goals in the third quarter and Luber added her second of the day for Stanford to go up 11-2. Erica Horman netted a goal for Irvine before heading into the final quarter.
Chelsea Culton put the Anteaters within 11-3 in the fourth quarter, but Stanford sealed the victory on goals from Lauren Faust (Annapolis, MD) and Heather Stamper (Yorba Linda, CA) to take the 13-3 win.
Villa led the Cardinal offensive attack with three goals, followed by two scores each from Gardner, Jackson and Luber. Jackie Frank (Long Beach, CA) had six saves in goal for the Cardinal.
Stanford will next be in action on Friday, April 12 when it hosts California in the Big Splash at 7 p.m. in Avery Stadium.
