Women's Crew Varsity Eight Advances to Grand Finals of NCAA Championship

June 1, 2002

Indianapolis, IN - The women's varsity eight raced to third place in the semi-finals today to secure a spot in tomorrow's grand final. The boat got off to a solid start in close contact with Brown, Princeton, and Harvard and ahead of USC and Michigan. In the second 500 Stanford pulled up to the bow of Harvard taking control of third place. The Cardinal then fought off a hard charge from USC to finish third just 3.5 seconds off the leader No. 2 Brown University. In the finals Stanford will face No. 3 Ohio State, No. 7 California, No. 8 Princeton, No. 2 Brown and No. 1 Washington.

Both the second varsity and the varsity four will race in the petite finals tomorrow for places 7-12 after missing out in the semis. The varsity four lead to the 1000 meter mark and then fell off the pace of the qualifiers. The second varsity never quite found their rhythm. Both boats look to tomorrow to have big performances in the petite final.
