NCAA DIVISION I BASEBALL SUPER REGIONAL
at Stanford, CA
Post-Game Press Conference Quotes
June 7, 2002 (Game 01)
Stanford 4, Southern California 2
Head Coach Mike Gillespie
(Opening Statement)
"Well, it was a real good college baseball game, I think that Guthrie was certainly the difference; he was exceptional for 7 innings, for sure. He made, what we believe to be, a good offensive club, not very offensive, I think that's a reflection on him, he was real special tonight. I think Anthony [Reyes] pitched well and we did a couple real good things on defense. We battled and we played hard, now we've got to get to bed early and come out and try it again tomorrow."
(On Guthrie's curve ball)
"Guthrie just does all things well, he has real good velocity, he throws two different breaking balls and he throws the change-up nicely. I think certainly if he were unable to get the breaking ball over that would make the difference. This was the fifth time we've seen him in two years and we've certainly come to realize that this is what he's capable of. He was, in my opinion, at the top of his game, the breaking ball was a very successful pitch."
Catcher Alberto Concepcion
(On facing Guthrie now vs. the beginning of the season)
"Early on in the season he hit him somewhat well, today I think he came after us knowing we'd hit him well earlier. He wasn't letting up he was going right after us and he was throwing a lot of strikes. He was throwing a mix of pitches and chasing us with his fastball, he was keeping good hitting down."
Starting pitcher Anthony Reyes
(On his performance today)
"I just made two mistakes today and they got hit out of the park, but other than thought I thought I pitched pretty good. For the most part I was hitting my spots, but those two mistakes killed me."
Shortstop Michael Moon
(On what they can do to beat Stanford tomorrow)
"I think we know as a team that tonight was just a great baseball game and they came out on top. Our motto is one-in-a-row, and we're not thinking about Sunday's game we're just thinking about tomorrow, and we're just going to come out and battle for nine innings and play with our hearts and put everything on the line and see what we can do."
STANFORDHead Coach Mark Marquess
(Opening Statement)
"It was another great game, well pitched by both Jeremy [Guthrie] and [Anthony] Reyes. I thought that Jeremy was even sharper than he was last week when he beat Fullerton and his stuff was a little bit sharper. He was great against a real potent USC lineup, they're a good offensive team, they're very dangerous, they have a lot of power in the lineup. It was a big difference having a two-run lead vs. a one-ruin lead in the 9th against an offense like USC. And Dan Rich came in as he has in the last few weeks for us and finished strong. It was a hard fought game, at this stage, we've played each other so much and we know that it's till tough to execute and do the things you need to do, it's a big win for us."
(On Guthrie as his Friday night starter)
"He's our workhorse, he's our go-to guy, he has been for two years, he's been our Friday starter and he always gives us a chance to win. Sometimes we don't' score enough for him, but he always give us a chance to win and that's what you need to have a good team and a good season, you need a good number one starter. He couldn't come up any bigger than he has. I think his last five starts, and this sixth, have been the best of his career at Stanford. It means everything, because you're matching up against the other team's number one starter and that's what you need to win games."
Starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie
(On increased focus since the postseason began)"Well, I just try to take the same approach every game, especially at the end of the season when we were making a run for the Pac-10 title, I just tried to keep the same approach for every single game and I think that the postseason takes care of itself, its just like any other start. I think that as a team we are prepared to go into the postseason, I think that's what Coach Marquess does for us and I think we do that really well as a team. We've made it to the World Series the last three years because we do it as a team, not as individuals."
Rightfielder Carlos Quentin
(On his 2-run homerun)
"I was seeing his curveball well and I was seeing his fastball well and I kind of crept up on the plate a little bit to try to take away the inside corner and he came inside and I just kind of reacted to it. The homerun was a fastball."
