Stanford Jumps Out To 124-Point Lead In NACDA Directors' Cup Standings

Cardinal scores 443 points behind the strength of five top five finishes in the fall.

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Stanford University has taken a 124-point lead in the race for the 2002-03 NACDA Directors' Cup, according to the latest standings released on Jan. 2.

Stanford, which has won the last eight Directors' Cups, has 443 points. Penn State is second with 319 points, while Notre Dame (279), Wake Forest (277) and Michigan State (240) round out the top five.

Stanford has scored points in five fall sports, including a national title in men's cross country (100 points). The Cardinal also received 90 points apiece for second-place finishes in women's cross country, women's volleyball and men's soccer and 73 points for a fifth-place finish in women's soccer.

The standings are based upon the completion of men's and women's cross country, field hockey, I-AA football, men's and women's soccer and women's volleyball.

The NACDA Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports - 10 men's and 10 women's. Each national champion receives 100 points.
