Stanford, Calif. - The third-ranked Stanford men's swimming and diving team topped No. 1 Michigan, 148.5-89.5 today at the Avery Aquatic Center in Stanford, Calif.
The Cardinal improve to 2-0 overall while the Wolverines fall to 4-1 in dual meet action.
Stanford opened the meet with a victory in the 400y medley relay. The team of Peter Marshall, Michael Bruce, Jayme Cramer and Andrew Schnell posted a season-best time of 3:14.15. The Cardinal also took second (Dan Westcott, Pat Fowler, Matt McDonald, Scott Ransenberg) in 3:16.23.
Michigan's Peter Vanderkaay picked up top honors in the 1000y freestyle (9:01.20) while Stanford's Matt Sorlien (9:08.46) and Michael McLean (9:09.67) finished second and third respectively. The Cardinal took two of the top three spots in the 200y freestyle as Markus Rogan claimed victory in a time of 1:37.28 and John Waters was third (1:37.48). Stanford went 1-2-3 in the 50y freestyle as Randall Bal (20.06), Peter Marshall (20.26) and Bobby O'Bryan (20.63) finished ahead of the pack.
Cardinal Dan Trupin turned in the fastest time this year in the 200y IM as he finished first in 1:46.51 to break the pool record set by teammate Markus Rogan last season. Freshman Tobias Oriwol placed second posted a time of 1:50.42 while teammate Michael Bruce was third (1:50.46). In the men's one-meter diving competition, Stanford's Adam Peterson won the event with a score of 219.20. Gavin Olmstead finished third with a score of 170.85 as well.
It was another Stanford sweep in the 200y fly as Jayme Cramer (1:46.16), Dan Westcott (1:48.26) and Matt McDonald (1:49.48) finished 1-2-3 respectively to lead the Cardinal. Bobby O'Bryan won the 100y freestyle with his time of 44.88, followed by teammate Randall Bal in a time of 44.91. Dan Trupin took third (45.29) along with Michigan's Garrett Mangieri (45.29). The 200y backstroke saw Stanford's Peter Marshall and Markus Rogan finish 1-2 respectively with times of 1:44.44 and 1:45.43.
Michigan's Peter Vanderkaay picked up his second win on the day in the 500y freestyle with a time of 4:23.73. Matt Sorlien placed second (4:27.05) while teammate Michael McLean was third (4:28.07). Cardinal Gavin Olmstead won the three-meter diving competition with his score of 324.00 while Stanford's Adam Peterson placed second (311.25). Michael Bruce turned in the fastest time in the 200y breaststroke, clocking in at 1:59.77. Cardinal Pat Fowler turned in the third fastest time with his 2:03.45.
In the final event of the day, the 400y freestyle relay Stanford's team of Randall Bal, Bobby O'Bryan, Dan Trupin and Andrew Schnell posted the best time in the pool with a 2:58.53. They were followed by teammates Scott Ransenberg, Markus Rogan, Dan Westcott and John Waters (3:00.75).
Stanford is next in action tomorrow, January 11, at 1 p.m. in a double-dual meet with Pacific and Cal State Bakersfield at the Avery Aquatic Center.
