No. 10 Stanford Defeats Cal In Conference Meet

Berkeley, Calif. - The 10th-ranked Stanford women's gymnastics team won three events plus the all-round en route to a 195.250 - 192.950 victory over rival California Friday evening at Haas Pavilion in front of 1,007 fans. The Cardinal improve to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Pac-10, while the Bears fall to 3-2 and 0-2 in the conference.

Stanford took a slim lead after the first rotation and never looked back, outscoring Cal on three of the four events. Freshman Natalie Foley (Englewood, CO) led the charge on vault, capturing the event with a 9.875. Freshman Glyn Sweets (Reston, VA) and junior Lise L?veill? (Burnby, BC) followed with a fourth and fifth place finish, respectively. Sweets posted a 9.800, while Leveille scored a 9.775 on vault. The Cardinal led 48.900 - 48.675 after the first rotation.

On the bars, Foley again took top honors with her season-best 9.925 performance. Junior Caroline Fluhrer (Seattle, WA) posted a 9.900 to tie Cal's My-Lan Dodd for second place. Lindsay Wing (Cypress, TX) took fifth with a 9.850.

The Cardinal dominated the balance beam scoring an impressive 48.975 and captured four of the top-five scores. Wing notched a career-high 9.975 to take first-place honors. Kendall Beck (San Antonio, TX) and L?veill? rounded the top three on beam with scores of 9.925 and 9.900, respectively. Fluhrer added a 9.775 to place fifth for Stanford. After three events, the Cardinal held a commanding 146.275 - 144.200 lead over the Bears.

California notched its best mark of the evening on floor, besting Stanford 48.750 - 48.550 in the event. Fluhrer and Wing each recorded a 9.825 to tie for second, while Foley and L?veill? posted 9.775 scores to tie for fifth place.

In the all-around competition, Stanford took the top two spots. L?veill? finished with a 39.125 and Foley collected a 38.975. Cal's Dodd and Britani Pittullo finished third and fourth, respectively.

Stanford returns to action on Friday, Jan. 31 to host its first meet of the season. The Cardinal will face off against Oregon State, San Jose State and Seattle Pacific in Burnham Pavilion at 7:30 p.m.
