STANFORD, Calif. - - Stanford men's gymnastics (1-0) defeated the California Golden Bears (0-1) 212.75 to 211.10 in its first meet of the season. The Cardinal's four seniors all started the season strong with top-three finishes in four of the six events.
Stanford outscored California on three events - on the pommel horse, the rings and the vault and tied the Golden Bears on the high bar.
Junior Dan Gill snagged first in the all-around competition, posting first place finishes on three events with scores of 9.3 on the floor, 9.45 on the vault and 9.6 on the high bar for 54.05 points.
Senior Matt McLean finished third with 52.55 points and a second place finish on the horse with a score of 9.35.
Senior Marshall Erwin, the 2002 NCAA champion, continued his dominance on the rings, posting a score of 9.4 while teammate Gill took third with a 9.0.
Senior Cade Raggio posted a meet-high 9.7 on the horse as Stanford dominated the event with a 36.6 to Cal's 33.95.
Senior Paul O'Leary notched two third place finishes. The first came on the floor with a score of 9.15, which he followed with a 8.8 on the parallel bars.
Stanford will be back in action on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 7 and 8 at the Winter Cup in Las Vegas.
