Stanford, Calif. --- - The ninth-ranked Stanford women's gymnastics team picked up three wins in its 2003 home-opener in front of a soldout crowd of 852 Friday night in Burnham Pavilion. The Cardinal finished with 196.575 team score, edging 12-ranked Oregon State (196.275). San Jose State took third place with a 193.425 and Seattle Pacific followed, recording a 187.825 score.
"It was a great competition," commented head coach Kristen Smyth. "I think we are in a perfect spot for this time of the season. Vault and bars were awesome for us tonight, but we have some things to improve on beam and floor."
Stanford started out on vault and used a career-high 9.900 performance by Lise L?veill? (Burnaby, BC) to hold an early lead over Pac-10 rival Oregon State. Kendall Beck (San Antonio, TX) posted a 9.875 to tie for second, while Natalie Foley (Englewood, CO) and Alissa Cooper (Silver Spring, MD) each recorded a 9.825 to tie for fifth.
The Cardinal then moved to bars, where they recorded a season-high 49.275 team score. Foley led Stanford with a career-high 9.900 performance to tie for second. Lindsay Wing (Cypress, TX) and Caroline Fluhrer (Seattle, WA) tied for fourth with a 9.875. Glyn Sweets (Reston, VA) and L?veill? followed with scores of a 9.825 and a 9.800, respectively.
Stanford took the top-four placewinners on the balance beam, but were forced to count a fall. Wing won the event with a 9.975, tying her career-high for the second consecutive week. Beck tied for second (9.925), while L?veill? and Fluhrer tied for fourth with a 9.850 on the event.
The Cardinal held a slim lead heading into the final rotation. Fluhrer turned in a career-high performance 9.900 to place fourth and L?veill? iced the meet with a 9.925 to win floor, leading Stanford to a team season-high 49.200 on the event.
L?veill? tied Oregon State's Tanya Ricioli for the top place in the all-around, each collecting a 39.475. The score marked a career-high for L?veill?. Foley was Stanford's other competitor in the all-around, placing fifth with a 38.775.
"Everyone is involved and getting healthy. We are looking to put our best team out there against UCLA next weekend," said Smyth.
Stanford will be in action next weekend when they battle top-ranked UCLA. Meet time is set for 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7 in Burnham Pavilion.
