Cardinal Win Charleston Spring Intersectional

Feb. 18, 2003

Charleston, SC - The Stanford University Sailing Team dominated the field of 18 of the nation's top college sailing teams at the annual Charleston Spring Intersectional Regatta, February 15-16, hosted by the College of Charleston at their sailing center in Mt Pleasant, SC. Long regarded as the first Spring Regatta in college sailing, this victory marks Stanford as the team to beat leading up to the national Championships in June.

An astounding 9 point margin in B division secured the win for the Cardinal in the two-division regatta. A-Division team, Skipper Ted Conrads '03 and crew Lucy Horton '05, placed a close third in the very deep A division, "Ted and Lucy did a great job of staying in the top 3 for the regatta," while freshmen phenom Brian Haines and Junior Taylor Clark captured B division and the win for the Cardinal. "Haines and Clark showed incredible boat speed and great decision making," commented Coach Kehoe. "Brian kept a cool head in light air and a tough fleet, while Taylor continues to be one of our strongest competitors when under pressure."

Sailing on Saturday was just like sailing at home with big breeze and current, however the sailing on Sunday was an all together different story. The blizzard that hit the East Coast on Sunday provided the team with driving rain and very shifty wind. The Cardinal dealt well with the difficult conditions presented to the fleet. Hometown Charleston rallied hard to combat a 25 point deficit but the Cardinal prevailed. "The College of Charleston sails in the exact location of the race course every day so they knew the ins and outs of the current and tricky winds" commented Coach Kehoe. "Our guys worked hard with the driving rain and very shifty winds on Sunday."
