Berkeley, Calif. - The top-ranked Stanford men's swimming and diving team closed out its dual season with a 173-112 win over No. 3 California this afternoon in Berkeley. The Cardinal improve to 8-0 on the year, 4-0 in the Pac-10, to remain undefeated this year.
Stanford swimmers broke six pool records today in the 100 back, 100 breast, 200 breast, 200 fly, 200 IM and 200 back.
The Cardinal opened the dual meet with a pool record in the 100 back as Peter Marshall took top honors with his time of 46.25. Teammate Markus Rogan placed third, clocking in at 47.57. Marshall broke the existing pool record held by former Stanford swimmer Brian Retterer (1995).
Michael Bruce followed Marshall's performance with another pool record - this time in the 100 breaststroke in 54.70. Fellow Cardinal Rick Eddy came in third with his time of 55.81. Bruce broke the pool record set by Stanford's Anthony Robinson in 2001. Cal's Michael Cavic won the 100 fly with a time of 46.10. Cardinal Jayme Cramer was Stanford's top finisher in this event, taking third (47.67).
The next event was the 1000 free which was won by Cardinal Matt Sorlien who finished 11 seconds ahead of the next competitor as he clocked in at 9:00.81. Stanford's Michael McLean was third with his time of 9:22.09. It was a 1-2-3 finish for the Cardinal in the 200 free as Jayme Cramer took top honors with a 1:36.41. Senior John Waters took second (1:38.07) and Rick Yang finished third (1:39.45) to round out Stanford's sweep. In the always exciting 50 free, senior Randall Bal (19.75) edged Cal's Anthony Ervin (19.87) to post his fastest time in this event this season.
Another pool record fell as Dan Trupin won the 200 IM, clocking in at 1:45.98. Trupin broke the record held by Cal's Ron Karnaugh (1989). Markus Rogan finished second (1:46.92) followed by teammate Michael Bruce (1:48.83) to complete the sweep. In the one-meter diving competition, Stanford's Adam Peterson took top honors (318.225) while teammate Gavin Olmstead finished third (293.4).
Cardinal Jayme Cramer won his second event of the afternoon in the 200 fly as he broke the pool record with his time of 1:43.91 (previous record held by teammate Dan Westcott, 2001). Dan Trupin placed third (1:47.27) as Stanford took two of the top three spots in this event. The next event was the 100 free which was won by Cal's Duje Draganja in a time of 43.41. In the 200 back, Stanford's Dan Westcott broke the pool record (previously held by USC's Lenny Krayzelburg, '97) when he touched at 1:42.36. Markus Rogan claimed second in a time of 1:44.87.
Matt Sorlien took top honors for the second time as he won the 500 free in a time of 4:24.96. Teammate John Waters finished third (4:30.91). In the three-meter diving competition, Stanford diver Adam Peterson placed second (304.725) while teammate Gavin Olmstead was third (291.825). Michael Bruce broke his second pool record on the afternoon in the 200 breast (1:58.40) breaking his own record set in 2001. Cardinal Dan Trupin was second (2:00.67).
In the final event of the day, the 400 free relay, the Stanford team of Randall Bal, Peter Marshall, Bobby O'Bryan and Andrew Schnell took second with a time of 2:57.04. Cal won the event in a pool record time of 2:54.02.
