No. 5 Stanford Defeats No. 4 California, 6-1

STANFORD, Calif. - The fifth-ranked Stanford women's tennis team defeated arch-rival and fourth-ranked California 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Taube Tennis Center. The Cardinal improved to 5-1, while the Golden Bears fell to 5-2.

With the win, Stanford avenged its only loss of the 2002-03 campaign. California defeated the Cardinal 4-3 in the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championship on Feb. 7 in Madison, Wisconsin.

Stanford was dominant in singles action, winning five of the six matches, including three in straight sets. Freshman Alice Barnes (Cambridge, UK), who is ranked 13th in the nation, won 6-3, 7-6 at No. 4 singles, 105th-ranked junior Emilia Anderson (Cincinnati, OH) prevailed 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 and sophomore Story Tweedie-Yates (Redmond, WA) was a 6-4, 6-3 winner at No. 6. California's only singles victory came from 12th-ranked junior Raquel Kops-Jones at No. 1.

The Cardinal also captured the doubles point on the strength of wins by eighth-ranked Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, NJ) and Erin Burdette (Jackson, GA) at No. 1 and Barnes and Amber Liu (La Mesa, CA) at No. 2.

Stanford returns to action on Monday when it hosts Pepperdine at 1:30 p.m. at the Taube Tennis Center.
