Stanford, Calif. - The eighth-ranked Stanford women's gymnastics team and third-ranked UCLA battled to a 197.450 tie Friday night in Burnham Pavilion in front of a packed house of 1205 fans. Freshman Natalie Foley (Englewood, CO) won the all-around competition, recording the third highest score in school history with a 39.725.
The Cardinal started on vault, where the freshmen class dominated the event. Jessica Louie (Loomis, CA), Glyn Sweets (Reston, VA) and Foley all set career-high marks. Sweets took second with a 9.950, Foley tied for third (9.925) and Louie for seventh (9.850). Lise L?veill? (Burnaby, BC) recorded a 9.850 to Louie for seventh place. Stanford's vault score of 49.350 went down as a season-high and the second best in program history.
Stanford and UCLA were tied after one event (49.350), but the Cardinal took a slim lead after two rotations. Foley (9.950) and Sweets (9.925) each recorded career-high marks on bars and finished in second and third place, respectively. L?veill? also posted a career-high 9.900 to tie for fourth and helped Stanford to a 49.525 score on bars.
The Cardinal continued to put up strong numbers on beam. Lindsay Wing (Cypress, TX) led Stanford with a 9.950 to tie for first. Foley followed in fifth place with a 9.900 mark. After three events, Stanford led 148.225 - 147.875.
Stanford carried its momentum to the final event, and was once again led by Foley's career-high performance. Foley won floor with a 9.950 mark. L?veill? and Caroline Fluhrer (Seattle, WA) placed tied for third and fifth, respectively with scores of 9.900 and 9.875.
Foley had a career night in only her first year as a collegiate gymnast, winning the all-around with a 39.725. L?veill? also posted a career-high 39.500 to place third.
The Cardinal will travel to Seattle, Wash., next weekend to take on the Huskies on Friday night at 7 p.m.
