Stanford, Calif. - No. 2 Stanford (12-1, 4-0 MPSF) is now alone at the top of the MPSF after posting a 5-3 victory over No. 3 USC (12-3, 7-1 MPSF) at the Avery Aquatic Center tonight. Cardinal keeper Jackie Frank collected 12 saves and held the Women of Troy to only three goals in the match.
Stanford took an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter as senior Julie Gardner netted two goals - both on assists from junior Lauren Faust. USC tallied its first goal in the second quarter, but the Cardinal chalked up the next three goals. Sophomore Hannah Luber scored a man-up goal with just under five minutes left in the half before junior Wendy Watkins tabbed two goals. The Women of Troy closed out the second quarter with a 6-on-5 goal with three seconds left to cut their halftime deficit to 5-2.
In the second half, Frank stepped up - recording 10 saves in the final 14 minutes. The Cardinal could not convert any shots, but USC managed to get one past Frank with just over three minutes left in the game for the only score in the second half. With tight defense, the Cardinal closed out the match to earn the 5-3 victory.
Stanford travels to Stockton tomorrow to face Pacific at 3 p.m. The Tigers are 5-13 on the season and 0-6 in MPSF action.
