STANFORD, Calif. - Eighth-ranked Pacific upset fifth-ranked Lewis 30-24, 30-27, 34-32 in the Cardinal Invitational on Saturday night at Burnham Pavilion. Pacific, which went 2-0 at the Cardinal Invitational, improved to 13-8 overall while Lewis dropped to 15-4 overall and 1-1 on the weekend.
Senior Aaron Wachtfogel (Redondo Beach, CA) had 17 kills, four digs, four blocks and a .464 hitting percentage (17 k-4 e-28 ta) to lead the Tigers, while senior Martin Berntsen (Naustdal, Norway) added 13 kills. The Tigers out-blocked the Flyers 13-5, and out-hit Lewis .394 (53-14-99)-.235 (51-24-115).
Sophomore Gustavo Meyer (Mexico City, Mexico) led Lewis with 18 kills, while junior Fabiano Bareto (Campinas, Brazil) had 16 kills, five digs and three blocks.
The Tigers jumped out of the gates quickly in game one with an 8-2 run that gave them a 16-10 advantage. Lewis cut the deficit to 24-23, but the Tigers scored six of the final seven points to close out the game.
Pacific built a 24-20 lead in game two, but Lewis cut it to 29-27, before Wachtfogel ended it with a kill.
The Tigers completed the upset by hitting .528 (22-3-36) in game three. The game was close throughout, and Pacific finally closed it out on back-to-back-kills by sophomore Nils Dauburs (Riga, Latvia/Riga CC) and Berntsen that broke a 32-32 tie.
