KINGS POINT, N.Y. - The Stanford Coed Sailors trekked back east for the annual Admiral's Cup hosted by the US Merchant Marine Academy at King's Point. The three-division regatta features a doublehanded A-Division and B-Division sailing in FJ's and Vanguard 15's and singlehanded C-Division competing in Lasers. After two days of challenging conditions, the Cardinal Sailors finished 6th overall of the 20 schools competing.
Rain and wind dominated the scene on Saturday, the Cardinal sailors battled in the adverse conditions. Inconsistent finishes were the rule in all three divisions. So, the highlight of the weekend was A-division duo Ted Conrads and Lucy Horton, who pulled off an amazing string of top-5 finishes in their last 4 races.
"Throughout the 18-race series, Ted and Lucy had pulled off some top finishes," commented Coach Brent Harrill, "but the string of 2, 4, 5, 3 was an incredible boost to the team morale."
Despite suffering disqualifications in races 3 and 6, B-Division duo Dave Phillips and Sonja Bebber still had good enough races to keep the Cardinal in the top half of the regatta.
The competition was tough, "each of the top teams had it's fair share of double-digit finishes," said Coach Brent Harill.
In the singlehanded Laser division, Brian Haines managed to earn 9 top-five finishes, including 4 first-place finishes. His finish reflects the competitive fleet, with a 7th in C-division.
The Stanford Coeds have their next challenge at the Team Race PCC's (a non-college event) hosted by the Treasure Island Sailing Center. The Cardinal will use this event as a spring board to launch them into top form for the Pacific Coast Collegiate Championships for both Team Racing and Fleet Racing. That event, to be held May 2-4 at USC, will qualify the top two teams from the west coast to attend the College Nationals to be held in June in Detroit.
