Lauren Fleshman Breaks Longtime 5,000 Meter School Record

Walnut, Ca - One of the oldest records in Stanford track & field history is no longer.

The 5,000 meter school record of 15:29.00 had been held by former Cardinal All-American and Olympian PattiSue Plumer. However, that record was shattered late Thursday night at the Mt. SAC Relays as senior Lauren Fleshman easily broke the old time in 15:23.94. Fleshman's time was also third fastest ever by a collegiate runner. Fleshman's previous best time was 15:35.59. Fleshman's teammate, Alicia Craig, finished fourth in a time of 15:25.75. Had it not been for Fleshman's record-breaking run, Craig would have held the school record in a time of 15:25.73. Craig's time is now second-best in school history and fifth-best all-time for a collegiate runner. Ejegayehu Dibaba of Ethiopia won the race in a time of 15:22.58.

In another 5,000 meter race, Sara Bei cruised to victory in the 5,000 meters. Bei ran the course in a career-best time of 16:03.08. Thursday's performance easily beat her previous best time of 16:22.54 (last year), and is sixth-best in school history. Bei easily defeated runnerup Kristin Ogden (BYU) who was timed in 16:19.86.

In the men's 5,000 meters, Louis Luchini finished fifth in a time of 13:31.80, a personal-best and third-best in school history. Adam Tenforde placed 30th (14:06.27). Alistair Craggs of Arkansas won the event (13:25.59).

In another 5,000 meter run, Robert Smithson finished 12th in a time of 14:15.26. Neil Davisplaced 16th (14:16.93) and Chris Emme finished 44th (14:58.97). Sean Jefferson of Indiana won the race in a time of 13:58.53.

In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Jeane Goff finished fifth in a time of 10:24.32. Kassi Anderson (BYU) won the race in a time of 10:05.73.

In the women's javelin, Erin Merriman placed second with a career-best throw of 144-8 (44.09m). Jennifer Lee was 16th (121-0, 36.88m). Hannah Warfield of Colorado was the winner (150-5, 45.84m).

Lillian Bush produced the sixth-best heptathlon performance in school history, chalking up 5,129 points to finish eighth at the Mt. SAC Heptathlon Championships on Thursday.

Bush's point total was also a career-best. Nicole Haynes of Canada beat nine other opponents with 5,917 points. Sophomore Ahimsa Hodari recorded a career-best 4,838 points to finish in eighth place at the California Invitational Heptathlon Championships.

Hodari beat her previous two-day best by two points. Earlier this year, Hodari produced 4,836 points at the UC Multi-Events. Hodari's point total qualifies her for the Pac-10 Championships later this year at USC. The qualifying standard was 4,400 points.

Freshman Sally Mills equaled the conference qualifying standard with exactly 4,400 points. Mills finished 18th. Earlier in the year, Mills chalked up 4,374 points at the UC Multi-Events.

Fionna Asigbee of Missouri won the 26-woman competition with 5,151 points. Four women in the competition produced 5,000 or more points.

At the Mt. SAC Decathlon Championships, Timi Wusu finished tenth with 6,355 points.
