STANFORD, Calif. - The top-ranked Stanford women's tennis team completed its 2002-03 regular season home schedule with a 5-2 victory over fourth-ranked USC on Saturday afternoon at the Taube Tennis Center.
The Cardinal, which finishes the campaign with a perfect 11-0 home record, improved to 19-1 overall and 7-0 in the Pac-10. Stanford can clinch its 16th straight Pacific-10 Conference title with a win at fifth-ranked California on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. The Women of Troy dropped to 19-5 overall and 5-3 in conference.
The Cardinal was impressive in doubles play on Saturday, dropping a combined total of just 10 games in the three matches. At No. 1, Stanford's top-ranked duo of Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, NJ) and Erin Burdette (Jackson, GA) defeated 19th-ranked Tiffany Brymer and Jewel Peterson 8-3.
Stanford also won four of the six singles matches, including an impressive victory at No. 1 by freshman Amber Liu (La Mesa, CA). The fourth-ranked Liu outlasted fifth-ranked Peterson 6-1, 5-7, 6-4. The Cardinal also received single victories from junior Emilia Anderson (Cincinnati, OH), sophomore Story Tweedie-Yates (Redmond, WA) and freshman Alice Barnes (Cambridge, UK).
USC received straight set singles victories from both Maureen Diaz and Luana Magnani.
