STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford University women's basketball head coach TaraVanDerveer announced today that Brooke Smith will transfer into the Cardinal basketball program this fall.

Smith, who spent her freshman season at Duke University, will be forced to sit out the 2003-04 season because of NCAA transfer rules and will begin play in 2004-05 as a redshirt sophomore.

"We are ecstatic to have Brooke join our program," VanDerveer said. "She is an outstanding basketball player with a very bright future."

The 6-foot-3 center appeared in 25 games for the Blue Devils this season, and averaged 3.4 points and 2.5 rebounds. She also shot an impressive 53.1 (34-of-64) percent from the floor, including 66.7 (10-of-15) percent in her final 10 games.

Smith, who is from nearby San Anselmo, California, was a McDonald's High School All-American as a senior at Marin Catholic High School. She averaged a career double-double of 14.0 points and 11.5 rebounds, including 15.1 points and 11.1 rebounds in her senior season for head coach Rick DeMartini. She was a Parade Magazine and Women's Basketball Coaches Association First-Team All-American as a senior, in addition to being named the California Division IV Player of the Year. She is the Marin Catholic career record holder in points (1,760), rebounds (1,479), blocked shots (464) and steals (410).

She is the first player to transfer into the Stanford women's basketball program during VanDerveer's 18-year tenure on The Farm.
