LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The second-ranked Stanford women's team picked up an impressive 5-2 road win over top-ranked USC on Friday afternoon at the Marks Tennis Stadium in Los Angeles.
Stanford, which has won 12 in a row, improved to 14-1, while the Women of Troy slipped to 17-2. The match does not count in the Pac-10 standings.
USC won the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3, but Stanford quickly took control by winning the first set in five of the six singles matches.
The Cardinal then jumped out to a 3-1 lead with straight set victories from freshman Amber Liu (La Mesa, CA) at No. 1, freshman Alice Barnes (Cambridge, U.K.) at No. 4 and junior Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, NJ) at No. 2. Liu picked up an impressive 6-2, 6-2 win over sixth-ranked Jewel Peterson.
Sophomore Erin Burdette (Jackson, GA), who is ranked 37th in the country, clinched the victory with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over 84th-ranked Maureen Diaz at No. 3.
Stanford concludes the weekend at No. 7 UCLA on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. in Westwood.
