Austin, Tx - The Stanford men's 4 x 400 meter relay team chalked up its best time of the season during Friday's action at the 76th annual Texas Relays at the University of Texas. The Cardinal's time of 3:08.30 (NCAA West Regional qualifying time) is third all-time in school history. The finals of the 4 x 400 meter relay is slated for Saturday.
The Stanford men's 400 meter relay team ran a 40.24 to place second in its heat and fifth-best in the prelims. The finals are also slated for Saturday. The 40.24 time is a season-best, second-best in school history and an NCAA West Regional qualifying time. The school record remains 39.7, set in 1978.
One field event final involving a Stanford athlete was held on Friday at the Texas Relays. Kimberly Stone finished second in the high jump at 5-10 3/4, a NCAA West Regional qualifying mark. That mark is fourth-best in school history and ties Stone's career-best.
Several Stanford women also are competing at the Texas Relays in Austin. In the 100 meters, freshman Nashonme Johnson finished third in her heat in the prelims with a season-best time of 11.80. That time is an NCAA West Regional qualifying time. Chauntae Bayne placed second in her heat in the 100 meters a Pac-10 qualifying time of 11.92.
In the 1,600 meter relay, the Cardinal women qualified for Saturday's final with a school record time of 3:34.82. That easily beat the school record of 3:39.27 set earlier this year.
In the 400 meter relay, Stanford was timed in 45.93, and 12th overall. That time was a NCAA West Regional time.
In the 100 meter hurdles, Undine Becker finished fourth in her heat with a conference qualifying time of 14.35. Lindsey Johnson also competed but did not finish.
In the 400 meter hurdles, Becker ran a 62.54 which was second in her heat. Johnson placed fourth in her heat at 62.58.
Several Cardinal men are also competing in Austin. In the triple jump finals, Solomon Welch placed 14th with a leap of season-best and NCAA West Regional qualifying mark of 49-3 1/2.
Several prelims were held on Friday. In the 100 meters, Nick Sebes placed seventh with a time of 10.88wa. T.J. Rushing ran a wind-aided 10.91 in his heat. In the 110 meter hurdles prelims, Justin Williams finished eighth in his heat at 14.79. In the 400 meter huredles, Williams finished fourth in his heat with a time of 58.18. Gerren Crochet was fifth in his heat at 53.40.
Several Stanford athletes are also competing at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational at UCLA's Drake Stadium.
The day's best collective effort was put forth by the women's discus team. Molly Meyer finished first with a season-best 167-2, followed by Jill Camarena with a season-best 160-6 and Kitty Currier at 154-10. All three marks met the NCAA West Regional qualifying standard. Lindsay Brisbin finished sixth with a season-best 139-10.
In the pole vault, Samantha Shepard was third with a season-best 12-11 1/2, while Leila Ben-Youssef placed ninth at 12-3 1/2 and Kathleen Donoghue in tenth place at 11-9 3/4.
William O'Neill finished ninth in the shot put (47-2 1/2) and tenth in the discus (159-2).
