Long Beach, Calif. - Second-ranked Stanford dropped its second game of the season as No. 4 Long Beach State posted an 8-7 win over the Cardinal today at the campus pool. Stanford owned a three-goal lead in the third quarter before the 49ers went on a 6-2 run in the second half to secure the win. The Beach improved to 17-5 on the season with a 6-2 mark in the MPSF, while the Cardinal fell to 14-2 on the year and a 6-1 mark in the MPSF. This is Long Beach State's first win over Stanford in the history of the school's 11 meetings.
Freshman Laurel Champion gave the Cardinal its biggest lead of the day 29 seconds into the second half with a power-play goal for a 5-2 margin. Junior Wendy Watkins netted her third goal of the day (the last Stanford score) with just over four minutes remaining in the game, but a goal by the Beach's Cassie Azevedo with 3:29 remaining tied the match at 7-7.
On the 49ers' third penalty shot of the match, Roberta Stewart scored the game-winning goal with 2:29 left in the contest, one of three goals by the sophomore on the day. Stewart ended the contest by stealing the ball in front of the net with 28 seconds left to secure the upset victory for the 49ers.
The Cardinal will be back in action next weekend as Stanford travels to Berkeley on April 12th before hosting Hawai'i on April 13th. The game at California will begin at noon while the match against the Rainbow Wahine will start at 1 p.m.
