Santa Cruz, Calif. - The Stanford men's golf team fired rounds of 290 and 291 on the first day of competition at the Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, Calif. and are currently in sixth place overall with a two-round score of 581. UCLA leads the field with a 563 followed by UC Irvine (576). Rounding out the top five are UTEP (577), Pacific (578) and Oregon (578).
Leading the Cardinal was Kevin Blue who is tied for eighth individually after shooting rounds of 68 and 74 for a two-over par 142. Stanford's Blake Mastalir is two strokes back, tied for 29th, with a 145 (73-72). Senior George Downing is tied for 29th with a 147 (75-72) while teammate Jim Seki is tied for 45th (76-73--149). Fellow senior Ron Won is tied for 57th with a 152 (74-78).
UCLA's Steve Conway along with UTEP's Dan Swanson are tied for first on the individual leaderboard at one-under par 139. Matt Hansen, from Pacific, and John Merrick, from UCLA, are one stroke behind the leaders with an even par 140. Three golfers are tied for fifth at one-over par 141.
Third round action concludes on Tuesday at the Pasatiempo Golf Club.
