Stanford heads into its series with USC having lost three of its last four games, while USC has won a season-high-tying five in a row. USC leads Stanford in the all-time series, 198-147-3. However, Stanford took two-of-three games (L, 4-13; W, 10-6; W, 18-4) in a non-conference series at Sunken Diamond (2/28 - 3/2) earlier this season and won seven of the eight games played between the clubs last year, including a pair of NCAA Super Regional contests (W, 4-2; W, 5-3). Santa Clara 2, at Stanford 0 (April 29, 2003)
Santa Clara handed Stanford its first shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory in a non-conference game at Sunken Diamond. The Broncos also snapped a five-game losing streak against Stanford and won for just the second time in the last 27 meetings between the schools dating back to 1997. Eight Santa Clara pitchers limited Stanford to a season-low four hits and the Broncos' pitching staff survived eight walks and two wild pitches over the first five innings as the Cardinal stranded six runners in the first five frames and 10 for the game.
Ryan Chiarelli (2-3) and Matteucci (2-4) had two hits each for the Broncos.
The Cardinal was held to a season-low four hits but Danny Putnam did hit a double, the only extra-base hit of the contest, in the sixth inning to extend his career-high hit streak to eight games.
LAST PAC-10 SERIES GAME REVIEWS (ARIZONA) Arizona 4, at Stanford 3 (April 25, 2003)
Brian Anderson's solo homer with one out in the top of the eighth broke a 3-3 tie and lifted Arizona to a 4-3 victory over Stanford. Carlos Quentin had his career-best 26-game hit streak snapped by going 0-for-3 with a pair of walks.
Arizona starter Richie Gardner earned the victory by scattering three runs and seven hits over the first 8.1 innings before John Meloan came on to retire both batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth to earn the save.
Stanford's John Hudgins (7-3) took the loss despite pitching a complete game.
Arizona's Brad Boyer (2-5, 3B, RBI) and Stanford's Jonny Ash (2-4, 2B) were the only players in the game with more than one hit. Moises Duran also hit a key two-run homer for Arizona in the top of the fifth inning, while Ryan Garko drove in a pair of runs for Stanford.
at Stanford 10, Arizona 9 (April 26, 2003)
Stanford scored four times in the bottom of the eighth inning to complete a 10-9 comeback victory over Arizona. Sam Fuld (2-5, 2B, HR, 4 RBI) drove in a season-high four runs and hit a key two-out, two-RBI double in the bottom of the eighth.
Carlos Quentin (3-5, HR, 2 RBI) homered and drove in a pair of runs one day after his career-high 26-game hit streak was snapped.
Jonny Dyer (2-1) picked up the victory by retiring the only batter he faced in the top of the eighth and Matt Manship pitched a perfect ninth inning to record second save of the week.
Ryan Garko also hit his team-leading 10th homer for the Cardinal in the third inning.
Arizona's Brian Anderson (4-5, 3B, HR, 5 RBI) hit an inside-the-park grandslam in the top of the third inning and Moises Duran went deep for the second time in the series with a two-run blast in the top of the eighth.
Brian Pemble (2-3), the third of four Arizona pitchers, was charged with the loss by being responsible for Stanford's tenth run.
Jed Lowrie (2-4, RBI) added two hits for the Cardinal, while Arizona's Trevor Crowe was 2-for-5 with a double for the Wildcats.
Arizona 11, at Stanford 6 (April 27, 2003)
Arizona became the first opponent to win a Pac-10 series at Sunken Diamond since 1999 with an 11-6 victory over Stanford. The Wildcats jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, weathered a Stanford comeback that gave the Cardinal a brief 6-5 advantage and then scored the final six runs of the game. Three Stanford series win streaks were snapped as the Cardinal had won its previous 15 Pac-10 home series, as well as eight straight overall series and eight consecutive in Pac-10 action. Arizona's series victory over Stanford was its first in the last 14 series between the clubs dating back to 1993 (2-of-3, April 23-25).
John Hardy (4-4, HR, RBI, SB) had four hits and homered to pace a Wildcat offense that collected 17 hits. Derek Decater (3-4, 2B, 3 RBI) and Brad Boyer (3-5, 2B, RBI, 2 SB) added three hits each, while Brian Anderson (2-5, RBI, SB) and Trevor Crowe (2-5, 2B, SB) had two each. Danny Putnam (2-4), Tobin Swope (2-4, RBI) and Carlos Quentin (2-5, 2B) each had two hits for Stanford.
Kevin Guyette (3-3), the second of four Arizona pitchers, was credited with the win as he scattered one run and two hits over 2.1 innings. Arizona relievers Derek Rodriguez (2.0 IP, 1 SO) and Mark Worrell (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 SO) held the Cardinal scoreless over the final four innings Matt Manship (1-3), the second of five Stanford pitchers, suffered the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) with seven hits in 4.1 innings.
NOTEBOOK STANFORD DROPS FIVE SPOTS TO NO. 9 IN LATEST BASEBALL AMERICA POLL
Stanford has dropped five spots to No. 9 in the latest Baseball America poll released April 28 after spending the previous four ranked No. 4. The Cardinal also fell four spots in the Collegiate Baseball (No. 7) and NCBWA (No. 8) polls, as well as three in the Sports Weekly/ESPN (No. 9) poll. Cal State Fullerton, last week's No. 1 in Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball is now the unanimous No. 1 squad in all four polls. Florida State (last week's No. 1 in the NCBWA and Sports Weekly/ESPN polls) and Rice are second and third in all four polls, respectively. Stanford began the 2003 season ranked as high as No. 3 in the preseason Baseball America poll and has been among the publication's top 10 all season. Stanford has been ranked No. 1 at one point during each of the past six years (1997-2002) prior to this season. Stanford's poll history includes a run as "king of the polls" in 1998 when the team held the top spot in the Baseball America poll for the entire regular season (a record 14 consecutive weeks). Stanford has already played 21 games against teams ranked in Baseball America's top 25 at some point this season and 12 versus teams currently ranked in the top eight (No. 1 Cal State Fullerton, No. 2 Florida State, No. 6 Texas, No. 8 Arizona State).
STANFORD TAKES SEVEN-GAME ROAD WIN STREAK INTO ROADTRIP
Stanford will take a season-best seven-game road win streak (3/23 - 4/22) into its upcoming seven-game roadtrip at USC (May 3-4), San Jose State (May 6) and California (May 9-11). Stanford, which has not lost a road game in more than five weeks, started the streak with victories in the final two games of its Arizona State series (3/23 - 3/24) and has continued with three wins at Washington State (4/4 - 4/7), as well as victories at Santa Clara (4/8) and Sacramento State (4/22). The last time Stanford has won seven straight road games was when the 2000 Stanford team rolled off seven in a row (2/21/00 - 3/31/00).
TRIO OF SERIES WIN STREAKS SNAPPED WHEN ARIZONA TAKES 2-OF-3
Stanford had a trio of series win streaks snapped when Arizona won two-of-three games against the Cardinal last Friday-Sunday at Sunken Diamond. Stanford had won 15 straight Pac-10 home series, as well as eight consecutive series overall and in Pac-10 play. USC had been the last team to defeat the Cardinal in a Pac-10 series at Sunken Diamond (2-of-3, April 16-18, 1999), while Florida State (2-of-3, 2/7/03 - 2/9/03) and Oregon State (2-of-3, 4/26/02 - 4/28/02) had been the last team and Pac-10 team, respectively, to take a series from the Cardinal. Stanford has still won 42 of its last 49 regular season series overall.
TOP OF THE PAC
Stanford is currently tied for first-place in the Pac-10 standings with Arizona State as both teams have 10-5 conference marks, one-half game ahead of Arizona (10-6 Pac-10) and one game in front of USC (9-6 Pac-10). Stanford did lead the Pac-10 race by two games prior to last weekend before the Cardinal dropped two-of-three to Arizona and Arizona State swept Washington State. USC also got back in thick of the race by sweeping a series at Oregon State. Stanford, which plays at USC this Saturday-Sunday (May 3-4) has already won two-of-three versus Arizona State but Arizona holds the tiebreaker edge over the Cardinal. Stanford has won a total of 18 conference championships in school history, including 16 Pac-10 crowns (includes Southern Division and shared titles). Stanford's last Pac-10 championship came in 2000 when the team finished in a three-way tie for the conference title with Arizona State and UCLA. Stanford has finished second in the conference behind two-time defending league champion USC each of the last two years and has been among the top two in the conference standings (includes Pac-10 Southern Division) for nine straight seasons and 20 times in the last 22 years.
CARLOS QUENTIN LEADS PAC-10 IN BATTING, MAKING RUN AT SCHOOL RECORD
Carlos Quentin continues his run at Stanford's single-season batting average record and leads the Pac-10 with a current .422 average (#1 Pac-10) that is .008 percentage points off the school record set by Tom Williams in 1972. Quentin is also attempting to become the first Stanford player to hit .400 since David McCarty hit .420 in 1991. CARLOS QUENTIN HAS CAREER-HIGH 26-GAME HIT STREAK SNAPPED
Carlos Quentin had his career-high 26-game hit streak snapped when he was 0-for-3 with two walks versus Arizona (4/25). The hit streak lasted two months (2/22 - 4/22) as Quentin hit .495 (51-103) with 18 doubles, one triple, five homers, 30 RBI, 16 walks and seven stolen bases.
JOHN HUDGINS LEADS PAC-10 IN FIVE CATEGORIES
John Hudgins (7-3, 3.00) leads the Pac-10 in innings pitched (99.0), strikeouts (94), strikeouts looking (32), starts (13, co-leader) and opponents batting average (.227). He has four of Stanford's six complete games this season, including two in a row and three in his last four outings. Hudgins has lasted at least 6.0 innings in each of his 13 starts and has gone 7.0 or more innings nine times with complete games versus Arizona (4/25), Oregon State (4/17), Washington State (4/4) and California (3/7). In addition, Hudgins struck out a career-high in 8.0 scoreless two-hit innings in a 9-1 win over Sacramento State (4/11). He also carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning in a 4-1 win versus Fresno State (2/14) and earned Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors (2/11) after holding Florida State (2/7) to just one run and six hits with 10 strikeouts over the first 9.0 innings of a game Stanford eventually won, 2-1 in 12 innings.
MATT MANSHIP AMONG PAC-10 SAVE LEADERS
Matt Manship recorded a pair of saves at Sacramento State (4/22) and versus Arizona (4/26) last week and now has five for the season to rank tied for fifth in the Pac-10. Manship is also just two saves from entering Stanford's single-season list in that category.
RYAN GARKO LEADS TEAM IN HOMERS AND RBI, NEARING CAREER-HIGH IN RBI
Ryan Garko continues to lead the team in homers (10, #8 Pac-10), RBI (52, #4T Pac-10) and multiple-RBI games (17), while ranking tied for second in multiple-hit games (18) and third in batting average (.364). Garko is just three RBI shy of equaling his career-high in RBI of 55 last season. Garko has hit safely in 17 of his last 19 games with a .444 batting average (32-72), eight doubles, six homers and 27 RBI during the stretch.
MARK ROMANCZUK CONTINUES TO LEAD PAC-10 IN WINS
Mark Romanczuk is the Pac-10 and club leader in victories with a perfect 8-0 record. Romanczuk, who was twice named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week in April (4/1, 4/20), has recorded a 3.88 ERA and added two saves with 49 strikeouts in 58.0 innings. Romanczuk also has one of the team's six complete games.
DANNY PUTNAM SECOND ON CLUB IN BATTING AVERAGE, HOMERS, RBI
Danny Putnam is now second on the club in batting average (.376, #10 Pac-10), homers (9) and RBI (37). Putnam has a current career-best eight-game hit streak (4/17 - 4/29) in which he is hitting .448 (13-29) with two doubles, three homers and 12 RBI.
SAM FULD AND CARLOS QUENTIN ON ALL-TIME BATTING AVERAGE LIST
Sam Fuld (.352, 249-708) is currently tied for sixth and Carlos Quentin (.349, 227-651) tied for tenth on the school's all-time batting average list. Fuld began the 2003 campaign on top of Stanford's career batting average list (.367) but has lost .015 points off his career mark. Quentin began the year with a .324 mark but has added .025 points to his career average.

CARDINAL LOOKING TO EXTEND STRING OF 40-WIN SEASONS TO NINE
Stanford is looking to extend its string of 40-win seasons to nine in 2003 after picking up its eighth straight 40-win season last year by finishing with a 47-18 overall mark. The last time Stanford didn't win 40 games was when the club finished 27-28 in 1993.
STANFORD SUFFERS FIRST SHUTOUT IN 61 GAMES
Stanford's 2-0 shutout loss to Santa Clara this past Tuesday (4/29) was the first time the Cardinal had been shutout in the last 61 games since San Jose State defeated the Cardinal, 12-0, in San Jose on May 1, 2002. Stanford had also played 49 home games since last being shutout at home, 2-0 in 10 innings by Texas on March 29, 2002.
STANFORD CONCLUDES ROAD TRIP AT SAN JOSE STATE AND CAL NEXT WEEK
Stanford concludes a seven-game road trip with its final four regular season road games at San Jose State (Tuesday, May 6) and California (Friday-Sunday, May 9-11) next week. The Cardinal holds an all-time 73-30 lead over San Jose State after winning the first game between the clubs this season, 4-2 (4/15/03). Last year, the teams split a pair of games with both teams winning on their home field (at Stanford, 5-4, April 9; at San Jose State, 12-0, May 1). Last year, Stanford won five of the six games between the clubs. California last won a series over the Cardinal with two-of-three wins in Berkeley from April 27-29, 2001 (W, 7-4; W, 7-0; L, 5-9).
OFFENSIVE REPORT
Stanford's current season batting average stands at .313 (#3 Pac-10), which would rank tied for fifth on Stanford's all-time list for a single-season. Carlos Quentin is having a huge season, leading the club and the Pac-10 in batting average (.422). Quentin also paces the team in hits (68, #5-T Pac-10), runs scored (46, #9T Pac-10), doubles (21, #2 Pac-10), walks (29, #6T Pac-10), hit-by-pitches (9, #7T Pac-10), extra-base hits (28), total bases (109, #7 Pac-10), slugging percentage (.677, #7 Pac-10), on-base percentage (.527, #3 Pac-10) and multiple-hit games (19). Ryan Garko has team-highs in home runs (10, #8 Pac-10), RBI (52, #4T Pac-10), multiple-RBI games (17) and sacrifice flies (3, shares team lead with Jed Lowrie and Danny Putnam). Sam Fuld paces the Cardinal at bats (188), while John Mayberry, Jr. leads the team with six triples and Brian Hall has a team-high 11 stolen bases. Putnam (.376), Garko (.364), Jed Lowrie (.321), Tobin Swope (.319) and Fuld (.309) join Quentin above the .300 mark.
PITCHING REPORT
Stanford's ERA currently sits at 4.26 (#2 Pac-10) and the Cardinal has held its opponents to a Pac-10 low .249 batting average (tied with Arizona State). John Hudgins (7-3, 3.00) is the Pac-10's leader in innings pitched (99.0), strikeouts (94), strikeouts looking (32), starts (13, shares Pac-10 lead) and opponents' batting average (.227), while ranking one victory behind teammate and conference leader Mark Romanczuk (8-0, 3.88, 2 SV, 58.0 IP, 49 SO) in victories. Hudgins also has four of the team's six complete games and the lowest ERA (#3 Pac-10) among Stanford's starting pitchers. Romanczuk was named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week twice in April (4/1, 4/20). Ryan McCally (3-2, 5.54, 1 SV) has been Stanford's other starter for most of the season and has one of the team's six complete games, as does Romanczuk. Matt Manship (1-3, 3.71, 5 SV, 34.0 IP, 31 SO) paces the club and ranks tied for fifth in the Pac-10 in saves, while David O'Hagan (4-1, 5.03, 3 SV, 34.0 IP, 36 SO) and Kodiak Quick (1-0, 5.55, 3 SV, 24.1 IP, 25 SO) have added three each. O'Hagan has also won four games out of the bullpen, while Jonny Dyer (2-1, 2.92, 12.1 IP, 5 SO) has picked up a pair of victories. Manship, Quick, Drew Ehrlich (1-0, 4.67, 17.1 IP, 16 SO) and Tim Cunningham (1-2, 6.85, 22.1 IP, 15 SO) have one win each. Stanford has already posted 14 saves, second in the conference.
DEFENSIVE REPORT
Stanford has a .969 fielding percentage (#3 Pac-10) and has been errorless in four of its last nine games and 14 overall. John Mayberry, Jr. leads the club and ranks fifth in the Pac-10 with 342 putouts, while Tobin Swope has a team-high 113 assists (#9 Pac-10). Mayberry's 16 putouts at Washington State (4/5), as well as six assists by Jonny Ash versus Florida State (2/9), Chris Lewis at Arizona State (3/23), Jed Lowrie at Washington State (4/4) and Brian Hall versus Oregon State (4/18) are single-game team highs. Stanford turned a season-high three double plays versus Nevada (2/17).

Stanford's storied baseball program has had many highlights now in its 110th season since beginning in 1892. Stanford has an all-time record of 2354-1480-32 (.613) ... STANFORD HEAD COACH MARK MARQUESS
One of the nation's premier collegiate coaches, Mark Marquess is in his 27th season at the helm of Stanford Baseball in 2003 with an overall record of 1121-547-5 (.672) and a 454-293 (.607) mark in Pac-10 action. The 1969 Stanford graduate has led the Cardinal to two NCAA titles, two CWS runner-up showings, 12 College World Series appearances, 12 NCAA Regional titles, four NCAA Super Regional championships and 10 Pac-10 or Pac-10 Southern Division regular season titles. The Cardinal has qualified for the NCAA Tournament 20 times in the its first 26 seasons under Marquess. Marquess began the 2003 season ranked 10th in victories and 16th in winning percentage among active Division I baseball coaches. Marquess moved into sole possession of 20th place on the all-time victory list with his 1101st career victory at Texas (2/22/03 - Game 1). Recent milestone victories were his 1100th career win versus Nevada (2/17/03) and his 1000th against Florida State (2/9/01). He has been named NCAA Coach of the Year three times and has received Pac-10 or Pac-10 Southern Division Coach of the Year honors on eight occasions. The Cardinal has posted winning seasons in 25 times of the first 26 seasons under his leadership and has finished either first or second in the prestigious Pacific-10 (formerly Pac-10 Southern Division) 20 times in the last 22 years. Stanford has had 104 professional baseball draft picks in the past 18 seasons, including 13 first round selections in the last 16 years. A member of the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Marquess was the head coach of the 1988 United States Olympic baseball team that captured the gold medal. Marquess was also an accomplished football and baseball standout on The Farm and is a member of the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame. He is one of only six collegiate baseball head coaches to have both played and coached in the College World Series. Marquess was the starting first baseman and a First Team All-American on Stanford's 1967 College World Series squad and played four seasons of minor league baseball with the Chicago White Sox organization.

STANFORD COACHING STAFF
Dean Stotz is in his 27th campaign with Stanford Baseball and his fourth season as associate head coach after he was promoted to the position prior to the 2000 campaign. Stotz served for 23 years as an assistant. Stotz currently coaches third base while also handling various offensive and defensive aspects of the game. Tom Kunis is in his fourth season as Stanford's pitching coach, while Dave Nakama is in his fourth year overall as a Stanford assistant coach.
