Durham, N.C. - Stanford freshman left-handed pitcher Mark Romanczuk (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) was announced Thursday as one of 18 new invitees to the 2003 USA Baseball National Team Trials to be held June 21-27 in Tucson, Arizona. The USA National Team will be selected from a pool of 36 players. USA Baseball has announced 26 of its invitees with an additional 10 selections yet to be made. Romanczuk, a candidate for National Freshman Player of the Year and All-American honors, leads the Pac-10 in wins with a perfect 9-0 record and opponents' batting average (.226), while also recording two saves and two complete games with a 3.63 ERA (#6 Pac-10) and 54 strikeouts (#10T Pac-10) in 67.0 innings. He has been named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week three times this season (4/1, 4/20, 5/4). Stanford has won all nine of his starts as he has recorded six wins and three no-decisions. He also has three wins out of the bullpen.
Stanford has produced 20 members of the USA National Team in the history of the team, more than any other collegiate baseball program in the nation. Four current Stanford players - Tim Cunningham (2001), Sam Fuld (2001, '02), Ryan Garko (2002) and Carlos Quentin (2001, '02) - have participated with Team USA.
Stanford (32-14, 13-5 Pac-10) currently leads the Pac-10 standings by one and a half games over Arizona State (44-9, 10-5 Pac-10) and two games over Arizona (33-17, 11-7 Pac-10). The Cardinal concludes a season-long seven-game road trip with a three-game conference series at California (27-24, 10-11 Pac-10) this Friday-Sunday, May 9-11 (2:30 pm, 1 pm, 1 pm). Stanford has won a season-best 11 straight road games.
