Stanford Advances to NCAA Championship Match Against UCLA

San Diego, Calif. - Stanford (21-2) downed Indiana (26-10) 13-2 today in the first Semifinal game of the 2003 Women's Water Polo NCAA Championship in Canyonview Pool on the campus of UC San Diego. The Cardinal will face UCLA, who beat LMU 8-2 in the second semifinal tomorrow at 3 p.m.

Freshman Laurel Champion was the first scorer of the game, beating Hoosier keeper Jessica Goldner one-on-one to net the first goal with 4:02 remaining in the first period. 1:15 later, sophomore Hannah Luber took the ball at 2-meters and shot the ball past her defender and Goldner for the 2-0 lead. Stanford took a 3-0 lead as Champion made an extra pass in front of the goal to find Lauren Faust who powered the ball into the back of the net.

Stanford's leading scorer Brenda Villa notched the Cardinal's fourth goal of the match just 22 seconds into the second period on an assist from Julie Gardner. Teamwork paid off again as Faust sent Gardner the ball on the Cardinal's first 6-on-5 for the 5-0 margin. With just under one minute to go in the first half, Faust notched her second goal of the day from 2-meters to take the 6-0 lead that Stanford would hold at halftime.

A little over one minute into the second half, sophomore Kelty Luber scored her first and thirty seconds later, sister Hannah netted her second goal of the match on the Cardinal's second 6-on-5. with 4:36 left in the third quarter, freshman Lauren Boreta tallied her first goal followed by a score by Heather Stamper at 4:06 to give the Cardinal a double-digit lead at 10-0. After Indiana failed to convert its first 6-on-5, freshman Scotti Shafer netted the Cardinal's fifth goal of the third period with 3:16 remaining in the period.

Senior keeper Jackie Frank collected seven saves in goal during the fist three quarters while allowing no Hoosier goals before being relieved by freshman Amanda Matuk. The Cardinal opened up the fourth quarter with a goal by Boreta with one second left on the shot clock and then tallied her third goal of the day 46 seconds later to extend the Cardinal lead to 13-0. Indiana's Krista Peterson scored two goals for the Hoosiers in the fourth quarter as Stanford took the 13-2 win.
